How to Choose Your Doula

Doulas · 5 min read · By Mara Ellison

Credentials tell you what a doula studied. Conversation tells you how she will be at 4 a.m. in your living room. Ask these five questions on every interview — including ours.

1. What happens if you are at another birth?

Every good doula has a backup you meet in advance. Ours: you always know both names before you sign.

2. How do you work with my provider?

Listen for bridge-building — nurses and midwives praised, communication described as teamwork. Be wary of anyone who positions herself against your care team.

3. What is your philosophy of pain?

There is no single right answer, but there should be a thoughtful one that makes room for epidurals and unmedicated birth alike.

4. & 5. Availability and aftercare

When do you go on call? How many clients do you take per month? And what happens after the birth — a visit, feeding help, a phone call? The answers reveal whether you are hiring support or just attendance.
